Champion city boxer dies at the age of 45
GLASGOW boxing legend Willie Limond has died at the age of 45, St Andrew’s Sporting Club has confirmed.
The former boxing champion tragically passed away after being rushed to hospital.
Limond – a former EBU super featherweight, Commonwealth lightweight, Commonwealth super lightweight and British super lightweight champion – had been found unresponsive in his car.
The fighter, who started out as a footballer at Albion Rovers, was taken to Monklands Hospital on April 6 with his condition critical.
St Andrew’s Sporting Club confirmed on Monday that “legend” Limond – who boasted an impressive 42 wins from 48 bouts – had tragically passed away.

statement read: “Everyone at St Andrew’s Sporting Club are shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Willie Limond.
Willie was not only a legend of the sport, but an infectious character who will be greatly missed by us all.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jake, Drew, Macy and the rest of the Limond family at this time.”
Limond had been due to return to the ring next month to face Geordie Joe Laws at the Emirates Arena on May 3.
Laws paid tribute to Limond after the devastating news, he posted: “Everyone would have herd about the tragic news about my opponent willie limond
“I am devastated, listen my old son Wait for me at the pearly gates we can get it on.
“LIKE/ SHARE X Lost for words man, this next one for u LFG.”
Previous opponent Curtis Woodhouse – who Limond defeated for the Commonwealth Light- Welterweight and British light- welterweight title – paid tribute hailing the boxer as a “great fighter and a great man”.
On X, formerly Twitter, Woodhouse wrote: “Absolutely devastated to hear the news of the passing of Willie Limond, a great fighter and a great man.
“We stayed in touch after our fight and always had a laugh together.
“Absolutely gutted. Rest In Peace champ.”
A Police Scotland statement last week read: “Around 8.05am on Saturday, April 6, 2024, police were called to a report of a 45- year- old man found unresponsive within a car in Heatherbell Road, Coatbridge.
“The man was taken to Monklands Hospital where medical staff describe his condition as critical.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
