Bike charity ‘ struggling to keep the lights on’
A CHARITY which gives bikes to kids for free has said they are struggling to keep the lights on.
Founded in 2019 and based out of Ferguslie Park in Paisley, Own Yer Bike believes every child deserves their own bike regardless of family circumstances.
The charity takes donated bikes and gives them to any youngsters who may need them. So far, it has given away 3,000 bikes to little ones across Glasgow, Renfrewshire and beyond.
But times are tough, and with financial struggles, worries are setting in about the charity’s future.
Alison Thomson, who volunteers at Own Yer Bike, said: “We are struggling to keep the doors open and the lights on.
“We have been going for five years now and we want it to be longer, we want to keep going.
“There is not a great deal of funding grants coming from government or councils lately and if we have to close the doors, it means there is a loss of kids getting outdoors and in the fresh air for free.
“Cycling has a lot to do with mental health and fitness, and we want to keep supporting families and kids, but we are limited in what we can do. But we will keep working as hard as we can.”
The charity’s struggles began post- pandemic and has continued to worsen as they face the cost- ofliving crises.
Alison explained: “When Covid19 hit, it really took a toll on us but there was a lot more funding available during that time.
“I would say it has been a more difficult time post- Covid.”
She continued: “Since the cost of living, demand has remained high, but we are still struggling.
“Bikes have always been good and popular things for families, it gets kids out and about, but we are limited these days.”
Though the team, which is run entirely by volunteers, may be facing hard times, they are still able to see the positives in what they do.
Alison said: “What makes it all worthwhile for the charity is getting to repair bikes and see the kids off. They have a big smile, and they seem happy. It’s so good to see that.” The charity has reduced working days and hours in a bid to preserve as much money as possible and have also set up a Just Giving page, as well as taking on the Kiltwalk last month. Alison said: “We’re doing everything we can.”
