HIGH SCHOOL HOPES TO WIN BIG AT ‘ OSCARS’
A SECONDARY school celebrating its 150th anniversary is in the running for a top award.
St Ninian’s High in Kirkintilloch, which is one of the oldest state schools in Scotland, has been shortlisted in the prestigious “education Oscars”.
It is the only Scottish nominee for Secondary School of the Year at the 2024 Tes Awards, which recognises the best teachers and schools across the UK.
St Ninian’s, which was the area’s first Roman Catholic school, opened its doors to pupils on January 19, 1874.
Famous former pupils include Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, The Blue Nile frontman Paul Buchanan and high- profile footballers such as former Celtic star Kieran Tierney.
Headteacher Paul McLaughlin said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted. To be recognised at such prestigious awards in the 150th anniversary of our school is particularly pleasing. “This is the fifth time we have reached this stage since 2010 and it would be fitting if we were to be ultimately successful in such an important year for the school.”
The school’s anniversary celebrations include “classroom experiences through the decades”, making time capsules and recording digital memories. St Ninian’s is also planning to commission a stained- glass window for the school oratory, a mural in the social area showing the school through the decades, an exhibition at the Auld Kirk in June and a pilgrimage to Whithorn – almost 150 miles – in August.
Our Lady and St Patrick’s High in Dumbarton has also been shortlisted in the Tes Awards, featuring in the Inclusive School of the Year category.
Two other Scottish schools have made the list – St Mungo’s High in Falkirk and South Morningside Primary in Edinburgh.
Jon Severs, editor of Tes magazine, said: “Congratulations to all the shortlisted entries – the standard was so high this year despite the challenges schools face.
“It is critical we celebrate excellence and share it widely so we can ensure the fantastic work happening in education is properly recognised.”
The winners will be announced in London on June 21.
