EX-CORRIE STAR IN TRIBUTE TO MARTYN
FORMER ‘STREET’ FAVOURITE IN PLAY TO CELEBRATE ARENA BOMB VICTIM
FORMER Coronation Street favourite Paula Lane is to star in a new play celebrating the life of Corrie superfan Martyn Hett.
Paula, best known for playing Corrie’s Kylie Platt, has joined the cast of Hope Theatre Company for #BeMoreMartyn: The Boy With The Deirdre Tattoo.
The play about Martyn, who lost his life in last year’s Manchester Arena bombing, will run at Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester, before travelling to Brighton and London.
All of the words spoken on stage are taken word-for-word from interviews with eight of Martyn’s closest friends.
They will take audiences on a journey from the cobbles of Canal Street to his legendary Eurovision parties celebrating Martyn’s favourite divas.
Paula will play Rachel, Martyn’s school friend, in the production at the award-winning theatre, based on Pollard Street in Ancoats.
Rachel talks of their first night out in the gay village, Martyn’s coming out and his idolisation of Coronation Street.
Commenting on the role, Paula said: “I am so thrilled to be joining Hope Theatre Company and to help continue Martyn’s legacy. To speak Rachel’s words and share her memories is an absolute honour and I’m looking forward to sharing this important message.”
Talking about the production, Adam Zane, artistic director of Hope Theatre Company, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support of Martyn’s family and friends.
“Having spent weeks speaking to them, we are in awe of how he transformed people. He changed the life of everybody he met and has since influenced so many more.
“We’re absolutely delighted that Paula has joined the cast of #BeMoreMartyn”.
Paula also features in one of Martyn’s most popular online videos, ‘The Audrey Roberts Noise, which has had more than 600,000 views on YouTube.
Coronation Street bosses paid their own personal tribute to Martyn, and all those who lost their lives in the Arena attack, with a plaque on a bench in the soap’s new Victoria Street extension, which will be a permanent tribute to the 22 who died.
After Manchester, the production will go to Brighton Fringe and finish with a night at the Southwark Playhouse in London. #BeMoreMartyn: The Boy With The Deirdre Tattoo will be at Hope Mill Theatre from May 22 to May 26. For tickets see hopetheatrecompany. com ●●
