Marching for People’s Vote Six buses go from town to London

- By SOPHIE FLOWERS

HUNDREDS of people from Gloucestershire made their way to London on Saturday for the People’s Vote march.

They joined hundreds of thousands who marched through the capital to demand a vote on the final Brexit deal before Britain leaves the EU in March.

Campaign group Cheltenham for Europe organised six coaches to the event, which left Cheltenham Racecourse early on Saturday morning with 282 people on board.

A coach also left Gloucester organised by Gloucester group Glostays and carried people from Cirencester and Stroud to the rally.

Young and old, aged from nine to 80, were gathered in Cheltenham, with many donning the colours of the blue and yellow EU flag to show their support.

Some took banners, flags and placards, and wore EU berets complete with yellow stars.

Mike Farmer, of Cheltenham for Europe, said: “This was a great day for all those in Cheltenham who want a final say on any deal that takes us out of the EU.

“Four of us, including a nine year old, were interviewed on ITV News, and Cheltenham for Europe banners and placards figured prominently in video coverage.

“Like all the hundreds of thousands marchers we were good humoured, well behaved, but firm in our resolve.

“The crowds were so huge we couldn’t get to Parliament Square, but we’re close enough to see and be cheered by the speeches on the big screens of people from all political parties and nom-politicians.”

One of the coaches was paid for by Gloucestershire-based Superdry founder Julian Dunkerton who earlier this year pledged £1 million to the cross-party People’s Vote campaign.

The multi-millionaire, who also owns Dunkertons Cider, sponsored a coach from Cheltenham to take people to the march and was seen in the crowds himself with his new wife fashion designer Jade Holland Cooper.

Mr Farmer added: “Our thanks to Julian Dunkerton for sponsoring one of our coaches and encouraging young people to join the march.

“Our next task is to capitalise on the success of the march by lobbying Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham, to support a People’s Vote.”
