Making the grade Pate’s top in county GCSE performance
PATE’S Grammar School is the best performing school in Gloucestershire based on GCSE results.
The Cheltenham school was followed by Stroud High School – where pupils made the most progress between Key Stages 2 and 4.
High School for Girls was third, followed by Sir Thomas Rich’s with Marling School in Stroud rounding out the top five.
The figures released by the Department for Education are based on this year’s exam results and each school’s Attainment 8 rating – an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSE.
Pate’s topped the county list with 80.4 points per pupil which put it among the top schools in England – topped by Henrietta Barnett School in Barnet with 85.8.
Across Gloucestershire, the average Attainment 8 score was 49.4, while it was 46.4 for pupils across all statefunded schools in England.
The figures also show progress made from Key Stages 2 to 4 based on Progress 8 figures compared with progress across the country.
Stroud High School’s Progress 8 score was 1.12 which was well above the national average.
It has been slightly adjusted to take account of children whose progress is much lower than similar pupils due to factors such as long-term illness.
This year 99 per cent of pupils at Stroud High School got strong passes in the new 1-9 grading system for English and maths, the highest proportion in the area.
A strong pass is a Grade 5 or above – nationally only 43 per cent of pupils managed to achieve these scores in both subjects.
High School for Girls in Denmark Road, Gloucester, saw the highest percentage of pupils locally achieve the English Baccalaureate with 93 per cent passing all the subjects that make up the Ebacc with at least a Grade 4 or Grade C.
This year there is a new headline measure for how well a school’s pupils are doing in the Ebacc – the average points score.
Pupils at Pate’s achieved an Ebacc average points score of 7.49 in 2018, the highest locally.
The average for all state schools in England was 4.03 and the maximum possible was 10.75, which is possible by achieving an A* in an AS level qualification in each Ebacc pillar.
