Rival football fans fight following away games
» POLICE were called to reports of a ‘large fight’ between supporters of football teams on a train approaching Cheltenham Spa railway station.
It kicked off on Saturday evening on the Edinburgh to Bristol Temple Meads service and British Transport Police, Gloucestershire Police and police dogs were called to the scene.
Supporters of Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town got into a brawl following their respective away league games on Saturday.
A number of police units were sent to the station in Queens Road, Cheltenham, but the altercation was over by the time officers arrived with the rival groups being separated and put on different trains.
On twitter, Gloucestershire police said: “Multiple FRU [Force Response Units] have responded to reports of a large fight on a train approaching Cheltenham train station.
“All in order on arrival, all parties separated and sent on their way.”
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Cheltenham station at 8.40pm on Saturday 27 October following reports of an argument between football fans.
“BTP and colleagues from Gloucestershire Police attended, and the groups had separated voluntarily on arrival.
“No arrests were made and there were no injuries reported.”
Swindon Town had won 2-1 away at Notts County on Saturday. Bristol Rovers had lost 1-0 away at Barnsley.
