Rival football fans fight following away games

» POLICE were called to reports of a ‘large fight’ between supporters of football teams on a train approachin­g Cheltenham Spa railway station.

It kicked off on Saturday evening on the Edinburgh to Bristol Temple Meads service and British Transport Police, Gloucester­shire Police and police dogs were called to the scene.

Supporters of Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town got into a brawl following their respective away league games on Saturday.

A number of police units were sent to the station in Queens Road, Cheltenham, but the altercatio­n was over by the time officers arrived with the rival groups being separated and put on different trains.

On twitter, Gloucester­shire police said: “Multiple FRU [Force Response Units] have responded to reports of a large fight on a train approachin­g Cheltenham train station.

“All in order on arrival, all parties separated and sent on their way.”

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Cheltenham station at 8.40pm on Saturday 27 October following reports of an argument between football fans.

“BTP and colleagues from Gloucester­shire Police attended, and the groups had separated voluntaril­y on arrival.

“No arrests were made and there were no injuries reported.”

Swindon Town had won 2-1 away at Notts County on Saturday. Bristol Rovers had lost 1-0 away at Barnsley.
