Let’s not rush this closure needs time
✒ ALTHOUGH morning traffic through St James’ Square has increased since Boots Corner was closed, it’s a bit daft of the headteacher at St Gregory’s to compare it to the M25.
In any case the article suggests that, rather than the traffic levels, Charlotte Blanch’s main concern is inconsiderate parents who park on double yellow lines.
Growing up in southern Greater London has perhaps given me a different perspective on Cheltenham’s traffic to some other people’s.
Even back in the 1960s the main road which passed my school in Croydon was as busy as any of our town’s roads are nowadays.
It would be a shame were Boots Corner to be reopened to private cars so soon into the eighteen month experiment.
It’s made the centre of our town much nicer to be in just as closing parts of the High Street and Prom did 25 years or more ago.
Those closures also resulted in a flurry of indignation from a handful of irate motorists but would anyone seriously want those roads reopened to traffic now?
Would John Lewis have moved here were traffic still roaring past its front entrance?
It’s foolish to rush to judgement, let’s give the trial closure a chance. Brian Hughes Cheltenham
