for the bingo hall to be demolished and a number of schemes have been put forward since then.

So while it has been known for some time that the last bingo hall in the town was likely to disappear, there may be some former users who feel sad that it has finally gone.

The building had been used as a bingo club since the 1960s, having originally opened as the Ritz Theatre in 1937. It also had a spell as a cinema. According to a report compiled on behalf of Lance Leisure, which owned Ace Bingo in 2014, the club saw its admissions drop 30 per cent between 2006 and 2008, and a further 20 per cent between 2008 and 2013. The report in support of using the site for housing at that time said: “Quite simply, the use of 391 High Street as a bingo hall has run its course.” robin.jenkins@reachplc.com
