School workshops play part in exploring different cultures
SCHOOL workshops have always been a substantial part of the activities offered by the Learning Team at The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum.
And this term has seen a variety of new workshops being delivered across both Key Stages 1 and 2.
To acknowledge the centenary of the end of the First World War we devised a workshop utilising original photographs, uniforms and artefacts, as well as providing the opportunity to visit the current exhibitions –At Last Fighting is Over within the Open Archive, along with The Listening Station: Cheltenham Remembers.
We have been making paper poppies, painting postcards, hearing the stories of the lives of soldiers and nurses within the conflict, as well as considering home life 100 ago.
Following the reopening of the WOW Gallery in May, we are also now offering new workshops to make the most of this immersive World of Wonders gallery.
Formerly the World Cultures gallery, the newly-refurbished interactive space is brimming full with the museum’s multicultural collection from around the world.
Our new Inspiring Asia workshops, especially for Key Stage 1 children, further explore the cultures of either China or India.
This new workshop includes a visit to the gallery as well as dressing up, object handling and the opportunity for the children to create their own Rangoli patterns.
We recently welcomed Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School’s Year 1 and Year 2 classes, who as part of studying India within school, chose to visit us for the WOW Workshop.
Following an introduction to both the geography and culture of the

country, they undertook a variety of activities, explored the WOW Gallery, thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and produced some beautiful Indian block prints.
Another of our long-standing popular workshops Edward Wilson: Antarctic Explorer, where children hear tales of adventure, dress-up and even draw or paint like Dr Wilson, will incorporate a visit to the new Ernest Shackleton exhibition Enduring Eye in the second floor gallery until February 24.
