Duff’s praise for matchwinner Varney

-

» MICHAEL Duff said he was delighted to see his Robins side grind out the victory against Yeovil.

He said: “I think we probably did pinch the win today. I don’t think we were great, but we’ve been brilliant this season, Crawley away, and lost.

“There’s very fine margins in this league and sometimes they are won on one moment or two moments in a game.

“We didn’t really get going today, or pass the ball. We were a little bit edgy on a difficult night, wet and windy and it was a good three points.”

The clean sheet was another bonus for Duff, who pointed to his side’s reslience and mentality.

“We’ve mentioned to the players is that every time we play at home we have to score two goals to win a game. You can’t always score two, so it was an edgy, bottom of the table game, with both teams knowing how important it was.

“Our lads looked like they had everything to lose. But a clean sheet, people getting cut at the end after sticking their head in, getting blocks in towards the end. That’s what you have to do.“

Duff paised goal hero Luke Varney, who won the game with his ninth goal in 17 starts for the club.

“We’ve been getting him more chances, I think,” said Duff. “Varns is confident and in a rich vein of form. He’s doing everything we hoped he would when we brought him in.

“You can’t ask for a better person or a better professional. He deserves every bit of credit for the goals that he gets because he’s been first class since he’s come in.”

Duff was also pleased with debutants Rakish Bingham and Jordan Tillson.

“Rakish (Bingham) came on and showed what he is about, running in behind and looking a threat two or three times, “said Duff.

“He was a constant threat, on the shoulder all the time and there were a couple of close offsides when the ball didn’t quite fall for him.

“Jordan grew into the game. It probably didn’t help him that everyone else was so edgy.

“Towards the end when we were digging out you can see why we brought him in.

“His front screening the centre forward, he’s good at sensing danger and calming things down.”

It’s difficult to come into a new environment and hit the ground running, so I was pleased with Jordan.”
