Tory government is playing God with people’s lives

Gloucestershire Echo - - LETTERS & OPINION - Mick Harman Cheltenham

✒ AFTER almost 10 years of Tory austerity it seems the country is not only more bankrupt than ever but this Government, through constantly cutting funding to the NHS, (no matter how much they deny it) is trying to ruin the population’s health at the same time.

This is especially true for anyone unfortunate enough to live in Cheltenham/bishop’s Cleeve /Winchcombe area - or anywhere in the north of the county with the proposed closure of surgery at Cheltenham General Hospital.

I can write of this through personal experience as in 2017 I was admitted to Cheltenham General Hospital with a suspected appendicitis.

Whilst waiting to be operated on, my appendix ruptured giving me the most painful hours of my life and leading to peritonitis.

There is no way in this world I would have survived a 10-mile trek across to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as it was touch and go that I would even make it to the theatre as things were that critical.

By shutting Cheltenham General Hospital to surgery the NHS trust is effectively signing a death sentence to anyone unfortunate enough to live at the wrong end of the Golden Valley by pass and further afield.

It is absolutely sickening and completely unacceptable.

Alex Chalk bleats on about restoring CGH’S overnight opening but it’s his Government that are playing God with people’s lives through their crazy, unnecessary austerity measures.

This is surely just the thin edge of the wedge as like it or not Cheltenham General Hospital is obviously being lined up for complete closure eventually.

How anyone can vote for a party that treats people with such contempt is beyond me.
