Defining moments Morgan at heart of crucial victory
WITH Gloucester losing their previous five games and Exeter scoring first through scrum-half Nic White, the writing looked on the wall for the Cherry and Whites.
But the Kingsholn faithful needed to be just that because in truth this was a comfortable win, Gloucester dominating the possession and territory.
Their main downfall was not getting a try-scoring bonus point due to some wasteful finishing, Jason Woodward dropping the ball with the line begging.
The player who stood out for me and has been in great form is Ben Morgan.
His work rate has improved dramatically and coupled with his great distribution skills, he gives Willi Heinz more time in defence and attack.
Mark Atkinson in midfield also went well, giving Gloucester excellent options with his vision and slick touches.
He also steps into the first receiver role which gives Gloucester that allimportant attacking variety, asking questions of any defence.
In big games like this you need your big players to stand up.
Cipriani was tidy if not at his spectacular best, his cross kick for Ollie Thorley was measured, accurate, and defining.
Add the firepower in the pack with Franco Mostert having a fine game.
The South African took his time to arrive but it is plain to see Johan Ackermann knew he was signing a gem of a player – abrasive, great work rate and a will to win that carries players with him when in certain times of the game it got tough.
This being Gloucester there is always drama with Exeter having an opportunity to kick to the corner from a penalty awarded from a neck roll in the ruck, which was a terrible decision by the referee.
Gloucester thwarted the initial drive from the line-out but in trademark Exeter style they battered the Gloucester line with power pickups.
The home defence in these final moments was heroic and resulted in a thoroughly-deserved win which keeps them in the top four.
It does not get any easier for Gloucester with champions Saracens up next.
Of course, this is the best possible time to play both Exeter and Saracens with both clubs shorn of internationals due to the Six Nations.
I have mentioned in previous columns the word defining.
Friday’s game against Saracens is totally that.
It represents an opportunity for Gloucester to really start thinking they can grasp that illusive top-four finish.
Friday will also be a proud night for me as I have been asked by the club to host the Legends Lounge along with my former team mate Mark Cornwell, which I am looking forward to, and a Gloucester victory will certainly make my night.
» I would like to wish Matson and Old Cryptians good luck in their respective RFU cup competitions this weekend.
Keep the Twickenham dream alive guys.
