People power Promenade packed as pro-eu protesters make chain
PRO-EU demonstrators formed a human chain in Cheltenham town centre, in response to increasing political uncertainty and ‘chaos,’ as the ‘threat’ of no-deal Brexit increases.
Groups from across all areas of Gloucestershire met outside Cavendish House in the Promenade, on Saturday in the first countywide demonstration.
The hour-long event saw people form a human chain, and write chalk messages on the pavement for MPS in Westminster.
The diverse crowd, hosted by Chelt4europe included people who travelled from all corners of the county including Glostays (Stroud and Cirencester), Tewkesbury-4europe, Gloucester-4europe and Cotswolds4-europe and tweets have shown visitors were also attracted from Bristol and Worcestershire too.
Cheltenham campaigner Sarah Daly came up with the idea and tested it on College Green in Westminster on Valentine’s Day where the regular protest crowd had gathered for votes on amendments.
The crowd quickly formed into a human chain and it became clear that being part of a chain, rather than just in a crowd, created even greater strength as well as a visual spectacle.
“We were keen to bring the county together ahead of the ‘Put it to the People’ march on March 23 in London” she said.
“It would be amazing if we can form human chains with the up to 1 million people who are expected.”
