Wild move Bar and restaurant announce they are to leave town
ABAR and restaurant in Cheltenham has shocked its customers by saying it is closing for good next month.
Wild Beer at Jessop House said it is closing its doors at Cambray Place on Friday, March 8 after three-and-a-half years in the town centre.
The announcement, made on the venue’s Facebook page and website, has been greeted with dismay.
No single reason was given for the closure and the statement suggested there were a “multitude of reasons” behind the decision.
The bar was opened in 2015 and was the company’s first venue.
At the time of opening, company cofounder Andrew Cooper said: “We like coming to and love the feel of Cheltenham.
“I think we have seen all over the UK a lot of new beer offers and we felt that there was an opportunity to put a more progressive beer offering in Cheltenham .”
The restaurant, just a short walk from the new John Lewis & Partners store on the High Street, will now be shut during the Cheltenham Festival - one of the busiest times of year for the town.
Wild Beer at Jessop House has an average Tripadvisor rating of four stars (out of five) out of 222 reviews.
Five-star reviews praised its welcoming atmosphere, quality of the food and the ‘amazing beers’ - as well as being dog-friendly.
Comments in more negative reviews remarked on the prices of the beer.
Food blogger Alex Hodgkinson is a food writer and ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution charity.
He blogs at foodfitforfelix.com and said of Wild Beer last April: “I’ve been more than pleasantly surprised by Wild Beer Co as I simply wouldn’t normally expect to be served dishes that stand up to the unbridled quality of their hugely successful and deliciously exotic craft beer selection. A truly great afternoon escape.”
On its Facebook page, customers were quick to make their feelings known about the closure and here is a flavour of the comments.
One woman said simply: “NOOOOOOOO”
As did a male customer: “Nooooooooooo!”
Another person described it as a “home from home” and another man said he was “gutted” to hear the announcement.
One woman wondered: “Where are we going to have our post race drinks and fabulous gold cup meal this year?”
And someone else tagged in a friend to say: “We need to go before they close.” phillip.nor[email protected]plc.com
