Buy a 2018 TV and get a Smart bargain
QWE NEED a new television set. Our present one is just a notch up from black and white and struggles to get many channels and even then, the picture can be blurry.
We have broadband at home but our television is so old it can’t access it.
We paid about £350 for our current set nearly 15 years ago. We realise TV sets have been getting cheaper and better. But we don’t really know where to start! There are so many models from so many manufacturers – and that’s not counting the shops and online stores. Please can you help? Maria T
ATVS have come a long way in 15 years and you can get a lot for £350. The vast majority at this price point or more will be Smart. That means you can connect to your home wi-fi to access streaming services and catch-up apps from the likes of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.
These free services let you watch shows you’ve missed, whenever suits you. You’ll be able to access Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, too to enjoy huge libraries of movies and original programming, although you’ll have to pay a monthly fee.
You’ll find that most TVS are 4K, so it’s not a feature you have to pay more for. These highresolution displays will make your favourite shows look crisper and you’ll be blown away by how good native 4K content will look.
Since most TVS are 4K and Smart, size is your main decision. We recommend sitting eight feet from a 43-inch screen, 10 feet from a 49-inch screen and 11 feet from a 55-inch one, so choose size that suits the size of your room and budget.
Now is an excellent time to buy since you can get TVS released in 2018 at a serious discount, but you’ll need to be quick as their replacements are already on sale and it’s only a matter of time before they are gone for good.
