Mullins ends stay with Robins after a season
JOHNNY Mullins has left Cheltenham Town by mutual consent halfway through his two year contract with the club.
The 33-year-old former Mansfield Town, Oxford United and Luton Town defender is retiring from full-time football.
His final appearance for the Robins was in the 4-1 victory at Yeovil Town on New Year’s Day, in which he was forced off after nine minutes with injury.
Mullins had also been taken off early on in the FA Cup first round tie at Ebbsfleet United in November after a suffering a blow to the head.
He started the season with the captain’s armband, playing alongside Will Boyle at centre-half in a back four and he put in some resilient performances.
But he struggled with some niggling injuries as the season progressed and boss Michael Duff began using a back three of loanee Charlie Raglan, new onfield skipper Ben Tozer and Boyle.
“I want to look towards the next chapter of my life, spend a bit more time with my family, and see what happens,” Mullins said.
“I’ve had a long career. When I started when I was younger you have all these dreams of what you’d like to achieve.
“I didn’t quite make it to the Champions League final or the World Cup final but I enjoyed my run.
“I think now with the age I’m at I feel like I’m ready for another challenge and some opportunities that are coming to me from outside of football. I want to see where I can go further and put my career in the box - I really enjoyed it and want to move onto the next chapter.”
Mullins, who is based in Kidderminster, made a total of 18 League Two starts for Cheltenham and one substitute appearance after joining from Luton last summer.
Duff now has 17 players contracted beyond this summer: Raglan, Boyle, Scott Flinders, Rhys Lovett, Sean Long, Chris Hussey, Ben Tozer, Conor Thomas, Alex Addai, Josh Debayo, George Lloyd, Ryan Broom, Chris Clements, Luke Varney, Archie Brennan, Manny Duku, Liam Mcalinden and Tom Smith.
Three of them, Duku, Mcalinden and Smith, have been made available for transfer.
Attacking midfielder Kevin Dawson has been offered a new contract, with negotiations ongoing,
Nigel Atangana has joined Exeter City after he and Jordon Forster both turned down new deals at the Jonnyrocks Stadium, while Matt Bower, Rakish Bingham and Tyrone Barnett have been released.
