THE councillor in charge of Tewkesbury Borough Council’s future has been announced. Conservative councillor Robert Bird was re-elected as council leader at a meeting in the authority’s HQ on Tuesday, May 28.

His return to power was approved by councillors at the first meeting since the district went to the polls on May 2 in the local elections.

The final election results meant the borough council’s administration remains in Conservative rule.

Mr Bird, who has represented the Cleeve West ward since 2011, is the final council leader to be announced after the local elections changed the make-up of the county earlier this month.

He said: “We will work together to deliver our ambitious plans to make our borough more prosperous and a

better place to live.”

The Cotswolds saw the Liberal Democrats take over the district from the Conservatives, ending its 16 years of rule.

In the Forest of Dean, councillor Tim Gwilliam was re-elected as council leader but revealed his fresh cabinet.

Councillor Jim Mason (C, Winchcombe) was made deputy leader of the council and the cabinet member for clean and green environment.

All of that means Joe Harris, (LD) is the only new leader at any of Gloucestershire’s main councils as voters in the Cotswolds brought his part to power.

The members of Mr Bird’s new cabinet are:

Mel Gore - Built Environment Jim Mason - Clean and Green Environment

Elaine Mctiernan - Commercial Transformation

Clare Softley - Community Mike Sztymiak - Corporate Governance

We will work together to deliver our ambitious plans to make our borough more prosperous and a better place to live.
