PLANT OF THE WEEK
SWEET WILLIAM ‘DIANTHUS BARBATUS’
SWEET WILLIAM is a classic cottage garden plant – full of colour, charm and scent.
It makes a lovely cut flower and will provide nectar for the bees and butterflies.
It’s a short-lived perennial but usually treated as biennial, and now is the right time to be sowing the seeds.
Like other biennials, such as foxgloves, once you get them established in the garden, they will self-seed happily and pop up in unexpected places. They are available in a variety of colours, often reds and pinks and many bi-colours as well.
The Duchess of Cambridge included a Sweet William in her bridal bouquet... aah!
