Ice idea – rink could be brought in for Christmas
ACHRISTMAS outdoor ice rink could be returning to the heart of Cheltenham this year. It would be in Imperial Gardens and is being touted as something that could bring more people into town over the festive period.
An application has been submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council which shows the temporary rink would be on land to the rear of The Quadrangle, off the Promenade.
There are also plans to have food outlets as well as a bar.
The application from the Cheltenham Business Improvement District seeks permission for temporary structures over 75 days from November through to January.
It says: “These temporary structures would compromise mainly of an outdoor ice rink, marquees, food provision and bar, to a lesser degree temporary office and other such structures normally associated with events.
“The period of a maximum of 75 days would include the construction and dismantling of temporary structures but not the time taken to re-instate the ground if and when required.
It adds: “The 75 days can be broken down into 29 days for construction and
dismantling and 46 days for the ice rink to be in operation.”
It is the same area of land where the Cheltenham Eye operated back in February.
According to the planning documents, which are available to view online, Cheltenham BID has had an initial conversation with Cheltenham Trust around the usage of the existing town bar.
The documents also say The Friends of Imperial Gardens were consulted this month with regard to the proposed activities.
The documents said The Friends were supportive of the proposal “but expressed a desire that the volume of any music played at the ice rink is kept to a reasonable level”.
In conclusion, the application says: “The council is keen to help businesses, both retail and night-time economy, during the Christmas season.
“This is particularly important in the current economic climate.
“The ice rink would be a wonderful attraction for Cheltenham but would also bring footfall to the town that would help businesses of all kinds at the most important time of the year.”
A previous Cheltenham ice rink was hosted in nearby Montpellier Gardens.
Gloucester also hosts a popular ice rink at The Docks at Christmas.
