Residents warned over cars as resurfacing work ready to start

Gloucestershire Echo - - NEWS -

» RESIDENTS are being warned their cars could be towed away when part of Gloucester Road in Cheltenham is resurfaced.

Gloucestershire County Council says it needs the road to be clear when the work is carried out overnight from July 25 to August 13.

Highways crews will be repairing the stretch between Vineyards Lane and the junction with the High Street.

Tesco’s superstore is off Gloucester Road and Waitrose’s shop is close to it.

For the safety of the road workers and members of the public, the road will be closed from the Queens Road mini-roundabout. Access up to Vineyards Lane will be permitted for residents only, as and when it is safe to do so.

Thousands of vehicles use Gloucester Road during the day. To limit disruption, the work will be done overnight, from 7pm to 7am for about 14 nights (excluding weekends). Crews will be using 2,210 tonnes of material to resurface 8,443 sqm of highway.

Parking zones 12 and 14 will be affected by the closure. Residents will need to find alternative parking as roadside and footpath parking bays will be suspended each day between 5pm and 8am during the period.

The council said vehicles may be towed if they are parked within the closure area and that this includes cars parked on the pavement or roadside parking bays. It said it had guidance of where to park on its website.

Councillor Vernon Smith (C, Tewkesbury East), the council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “This is the first of a few schemes in the programme designed to improve Cheltenham’s key roads. We hope this investment will help make journeys around the town centre a bit smoother for both drivers and cyclists.”

Councillor Chris Coleman (LD, St Mark’s and St Peter’s) said: “I am pleased Gloucester Road is receiving the attention it desperately needs.”

Council bosses warned that commuters would need to leave plenty of time for their journeys, especially if they were catching a train as bus services would be affected.

Other roads scheduled to be resurfaced in Cheltenham this summer include the A4013 Princess Elizabeth Way at Coronation Square, a section of the A46 in Bath Road and a section of the A46 in Berkeley Street.

From the mini roundabout by the railway station, remain on the B4633 Gloucester Road and travel in the direction of the A40 Gloucester Road.

At the junction with the A40, turn right and continue towards Cheltenham until you reach the Princess Elizabeth Way roundabout.

Then take the second exit and continue along the A4013 Princess Elizabeth Way all the way to the Kingsditch roundabout. At the roundabout take the third exit onto the A4019 Tewkesbury Road and follow the road to the point of the closure.
