Serving up change Store could have food vehicles after revamp

MOBILE food vehicles could form part of a new look for Cheltenham’s Waitrose store. The shop in Honeybourne Way is undergoing a big revamp and is due to relaunch on September 6.

Part of the renovation involves a new cafe, with extra seating.

And an area of hardstanding to one side of the outdoor part of the cafe could be used for two vehicles.

A planning application from Waitrose has been submitted to the borough council for an extension to the outdoor seating area next to the cafe and the provision of two ‘seasonal food trucks.’

Plans within the document suggest possible positions for what are also described as ‘food-to-go trucks.’

Photographs included with the application suggest that the vehicles would serve food from hatches.

It is not clear whether Waitrose wants to have them in place in time for its relaunch.

Shoppers are being funnelled through boarded-up sections of the store as 12-weeks of work takes place. The shop is undergoing a number of changes that will see it temporarily close from Saturday, August 31 until it reopens on Friday, September 6 at 8am. Bosses confirmed last month that the store would become 20 per cent smaller as part of the changes.

The plan is for another business to trade from the space in the building no longer needed by Waitrose.

There is no confirmation yet as to who will be moving in.

The reduction in size comes after Waitrose’s partner business John Lewis & Partners opened a new £23million shop in the town’s High Street last year.
