Bes­sell’s role Melissa takes Stars’ top job

NEW Zealan­der Melissa Bes­sell is the new head coach of Vi­tal­ity Net­ball Su­per­league side Sev­ern Stars.

Bes­sell, will start her new role in Septem­ber, lead­ing the Univer­sity of Worces­ter and Univer­sity of Glouces­ter­shire coowned team for the first time at the British Fast5 All-stars Cham­pi­onships in Oc­to­ber, re­plac­ing Sam Bird, who moved on at the end of last sea­son.

She said: “Is­tars have done a fan­tas­tic job in the Vi­tal­ity Su­per­league since their in­cep­tion and I am thrilled to be work­ing with them.

Bes­sell, whose coach­ing ca­reer spans more than 30 years, said Stars fans could ex­pect a side that would be “dy­namic, dis­ci­plined and fit, with a smile”.

She added: “My am­bi­tion for the com­ing sea­son is to build a new cul­ture, play some dy­namic net­ball while putting out some top class per­for­mances.”

Bes­sell played at in­ter­na­tional level, rep­re­sent­ing the New Zealand Maoris and started her coach­ing ca­reer in the age groups of the na­tional side in New Zealand, even­tu­ally coach­ing the New Zealand Maori team.

She coached the Fiji na­tional side for two years, then the Wales team for four years, as they went from 19th to eighth in the world and gained Com­mon­wealth Games qual­i­fi­ca­tion.

Along­side this, she coached the Celtic Dragons team in the Vi­tal­ity Net­ball Su­per­league.

She went on to be­come Di­rec­tor of Net­ball for Queen Ethel­burga’s Collegiate in York­shire, tak­ing them to suc­cess, win­ning the Na­tional School Cham­pi­onship.

Along­side this, she con­tin­ued to sup­port grass­roots level net­ball, as head coach of NW Pan­thers Net­ball Club in Ch­ester, a role she will con­tinue in.
