Bessell’s role Melissa takes Stars’ top job
NEW Zealander Melissa Bessell is the new head coach of Vitality Netball Superleague side Severn Stars.
Bessell, will start her new role in September, leading the University of Worcester and University of Gloucestershire coowned team for the first time at the British Fast5 All-stars Championships in October, replacing Sam Bird, who moved on at the end of last season.
She said: “Istars have done a fantastic job in the Vitality Superleague since their inception and I am thrilled to be working with them.
Bessell, whose coaching career spans more than 30 years, said Stars fans could expect a side that would be “dynamic, disciplined and fit, with a smile”.
She added: “My ambition for the coming season is to build a new culture, play some dynamic netball while putting out some top class performances.”
Bessell played at international level, representing the New Zealand Maoris and started her coaching career in the age groups of the national side in New Zealand, eventually coaching the New Zealand Maori team.
She coached the Fiji national side for two years, then the Wales team for four years, as they went from 19th to eighth in the world and gained Commonwealth Games qualification.
Alongside this, she coached the Celtic Dragons team in the Vitality Netball Superleague.
She went on to become Director of Netball for Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in Yorkshire, taking them to success, winning the National School Championship.
Alongside this, she continued to support grassroots level netball, as head coach of NW Panthers Netball Club in Chester, a role she will continue in.
