RESIDENTS and businesses in Cirencester have more time to choose their favourite design for the new Waterloo car park planned for the town.

Cotswold District Council said 347 new spaces needs to be built by 2031 to cope with parking pressure in the town, adding that Cirencester’s existing car parks are often filled to capacity at peak times.

The authority has been asking local residents and businesses to have their say on three new bold designs of the new car park, and will be extending the consultation until tomorrow, August 2.

Three different designs are being considered for the exterior of the new Waterloo car park, one uses wooden weave, another uses aluminium on stone and a third hare and mosaic.

The district council said more than 1,000 votes have been cast.

Councillor Mark Harris (LD, Abbey), cabinet member for car parks, said: “We are very pleased with the response both to the exhibition in the Fleece and online.

“It is clear there is a lot of public interest in this project so we decided to extend the opportunity for people to give their views on the designs.

“The feedback will be taken into account when the decision is made on the final two designs from which the winner will be chosen.”

Work on the car park is likely to begin in 2020 if the planning application is approved.
