Award-winning pub ready to be sold to independent chain

A PUB once labelled the best alehouse in Britain is set to be sold.

Sandford Park Alehouse owner Grant Cook hopes a deal agreed with the Burlison Inns Group will go through in September.

The High Street pub, which used to be gay nightclub EXS, was taken over in 2013 by self-proclaimed “beer enthusiast” Mr Cook.

It won the CAMRA national pub of the year award in 2015.

But last year Mr Cook put it up for sale, saying it was due to “long-term health issues”.

He added that he was in no rush to sell and hoped to find an owner who was also passionate about supporting Britain’s independent breweries.

It seems he has now decided that the Burlison Inns Group fits the bill.

Writing on the pub’s Facebook page, he said: “We believe that the Sandford Park Alehouse will fit into the Burlison Inns Group without substantial alterations.

“All current staff will have the option to transfer to the buying company.

“I intend to relocate to London. “I would like to thank our regular customers for your support since our opening in 2013.

“Many a pint has been enjoyed and many friendships made. I sincerely hope that you continue to enjoy the pub after I have moved on.

“Look out for events to mark an end of an era for us all.”

Talking to the Gloucestershire Echo, Mr Cook said he planned to sell the pub partly because of health reasons.

He said he did not want to talk about the other reasons.

He said he planned to retire and as his wife worked in London, they would be buying a family home there.

He added that he hoped the pub would stay largely the same after his departure, saying: “The buying company is a smallish independent chain with a good reputation for real ales.”
