Road will be resurfaced – ending a wait of almost six years

RESIDENTS on a housing development in Bishop’s Cleeve are cautiously optimistic after receiving notice their road is due to be resurfaced - almost six years after moving in.

Sunrise Avenue is set to be closed on a number of dates to complete works much to the delight of residents who have been questioning the time it has taken for issues to be addressed.

The local community has been vocal for a number of years about the condition of the road, highlighting safety issues and the ‘continually changing dates’ for the works.

However Bovis Homes, who is part of a consortium involved in the Homelands development, said they were “committed to completing the surfacing works” and that they had to enter discussions with new contractors earlier this year to commit to a new programme for the works.

The new letter, which has been sent to residents detailing the works reads: “We will be carrying out resurfacing works to the trenches and laybys on Wednesday August 7.”

It adds: “We will be carrying out further works to resurfacing the carriageways between Tuesday August 13 and Friday August 16. There will be road closures in place but access will be possible with diversions.

“Thank you for working with us on

this project.” Jo Burdock, 42, who lives on the street said she tripped over on the uneven road surface in June.

She is pleased to see works commencing soon.

Mrs Burdock said: “They have given notice of the majority of the work being done on August 13 and 16 so hopefully after then we will have a completely resurfaced and safe road.

“I’m just pleased that it’s getting done finally for all the people who live along here it’s been a long time coming.”

Another resident, Nicola Burlow, added: “Whilst it is hugely positive that we are getting somewhere, I still won’t believe it until the work has actually been completed.”

Mrs Burlow, who bought a house on the development in 2012, and said back in March that she had began to lose patience.

The community hopes that safety will improve on the street once the road has been completed.

A spokesperson for Bovis Homes said in June: “Bovis is strongly committed to safe environments for our customers and residents.

“Homelands is a consortium development and the company has been working with partners to ensure work is completed on the road and kerb, on Sunrise Avenue, as soon as possible.”

They added: “The work will be completed on the road over the coming months, before it is handed over to the local council.”
