Clayton signs for Town after successful trial

-

» LEWIS Clayton has joined Cirencester Town after a successful trial period at the Southern League Division One South club this summer.

The young goalkeeper has also signed for National League North side Gloucester City on dual registration forms.

Former Cheltenham Town youth team number one Clayton recently returned from a spell playing in Sweden with fourth tier club IFK Mora, having spent most of last season at home village team Bishop’s Cleeve in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

“I’m delighted to sign for Cirencester,” Clayton said. “It’s a great club with fantastic facilities and everyone has made me feel so welcome.

“The move came from signing for Gloucester City and Mike Cook suggesting a dual registration to get some game time under my belt and Cirencester was a club I couldn’t say no to.”

In their final pre-season friendly on Tuesday, Cirencester were beaten 2-1 at home by Bristol City Under-23s.

Louis Britton scored both City goals either side of a Michael Pook penalty for the Centurions.

They start the season at Gloucestershire rivals Cinderford Town on Saturday and then take on Melksham Town at home on Tuesday, August 20.

Evesham United were 3-2 winners at Stratford Town on Monday night, after drawing 3-3 with Alvechurch on Saturday.

Carl Abbott’s side went in front after 15 minutes at Stratford with a header from Matty Dodd but were pegged back three minutes before half-time.

Dodd then set up former Cheltenham Town wide man Adam Page three minutes after half-time to restore Evesham’s lead.

Ten minutes later, Brad Maslenjones smashed the ball forward from his own half, and it flew over the keeper.

At Alvechurch, Evesham fell behind when midfielder Joe O’neil played the ball back to goalkeeper Reece Francis but overhit the pass and it rolled in.

Alvechurch went 2-0 up before Evesham hit back when the hosts failed to deal with a corner allowing Ryan Paddock to score.

Jordan Sangha then scored a great goal from the edge of the box after good work from Lee Chilton.

Dave Reynolds put Evesham in front before a late Alvechurch leveller.
