Defender shows he has a clear eye for goal – from 75 yards

» REMEMBER the name – Brad Maslen-jones.

The 21-year-old defender introduced himself to fans of new club Evesham United in style, scoring from fully 75 yards in a 3-2 friendly win at Stratford Town.

Formerly a scholar Peterborough United and a pro at Hull City, Maslenjones says there is no doubt about his intentions.

“Absolutely I meant it,” he said. “When I hit it I obviously never imagined that it was gonna drop right beneath the cros bar, but when it did obviously I was buzzing like any lad would be!

“It’s by far the best goal I’ve ever scored.

“Being a centre-back you don’t get many chances to score from outside the box, so to score from my own half was something you dream of when you see the likes of Wayne Rooney doing it, friendly or not.

“The most important thing is the winning mentality for the boys going into the season and that goal ended up being the winner.

“We will build on the win and hopefully can have a great season and be right up there come April.

Since leaving Hull, Maslen-jones has played for Rushall Olympic, Quorn, Stratford and Bedworth.

Evesham start their Southern League Division One South campaign at home to Paulton Rovers on Saturday under new boss Carl Abbott.

“I am loving it at Evesham,” Maslenjones said. “The team is coming together nicely and we are starting to gel as a unit now.

“The lads are all class and we all get on really well so I am looking forward to getting going and seeing what we can do as a team this season.

“Thanks to all the fans that were at Stratford to support the boys, hopefully we can give you a season to remember.”
