I saw everything I want from my team –

Gloucestershire Echo - - SPORT -

A home win, a clean sheet and both your forwards score. Does it get any better than that?

I actually said to Russ (Milton, assistant manager) before game, I’d love it if we won 2-0 and the two centre forwards scored. We showed everything that I want from the team today. We showed quality in the first half and we could have been three or four up, we had a penalty turned down., there was a scramble and I don’t know how it’s not gone in. We started the second half like that, with another couple of opportunities and a disallowed goal. After that players naturally start thinking “we might not get the third now” so they start, not dropping off, but not being as brave with the press and communication stops because they start looking after themselves a little bit more. To be fair at 2-0 down, Carlisle have nothing to lose. That’s when the resilience kicked in, the mentality and if you did a defending session of how to defend the box with crosses and shots raining in, that’s what it looked like. That’s what you want, people throwing their bodies in front of it. Scott (Flinders) has come up trumps when he needed to, making a couple of good saves.

are you to see Gavin Reilly get off the mark?

It’s something we have tried a couple of times last year and it doesn’t always work, and it was a variation because it’s for Jake (Doyle-hayes) to get a shot off, but he recognised he was getting a little bit pressed, he’s had a touch and the composure he’s got. You don’t have to be 6ft 7in if you put good balls in good areas, a little bit of movement will get you in. I thought Gav was brilliant, particularly first half. He held it up, ran in behind and he was a real threat with Reg (Varney).

Also good for Luke Varney to get off the mark Centre forwards always want to get off the mark because they are generally selfish! No, they ran themselves into the ground. I am delighted for Reg and the pair of them were excellent. They ran themselves into the ground and then Lloydy (George Lloyd) and Tahv (Campbell) came on and we tweaked the formation, went 3-4-3 and asked them to do something that isn’t natural for them because they want to go and score the goals, but they showed great attitude for the team. We have not named the same XI yet. I have just told the players that and everyone in the group will be used at some point.
