Bird swoops in to claim tro­phy win

» NIGEL Bird shot a su­perb nett 70 to win the Cen­te­nary Tro­phy at Broad­way Golf Club.

Played for since the club’s an­niver­sary in 1995, Bird claimed the tro­phy on count­back from Jamie Thomas and Will Icke with David Good­win fourth a shot back.

Guests from 20 dif­fer­ent club joined home play­ers in glo­ri­ous sun­shine to con­test Ladies In­vi­ta­tion Day.

Iso­bella Lates and her part­ner Karen Stokes (Minch­in­hamp­ton) took the ti­tle with an in­cred­i­ble 43 points.

Close be­hind were Es­ther Pet­titt and her part­ner Elaine Ostroumoff (Red­ditch) with 42, one ahead of Judith Noyce and Joy Trinder (Strat­ford upon Avon).

Edged out of the top three on count­back were Kate Bel­lamy and vis­it­ing part­ner Heather Cass (Leomin­ster).

Ruth Masters (Eve­sham) was clos­est the pin on the fifth with play­ing part­ner Lin An­drew near­est in two on the par four 11th par.

Ladies cap­tain Irene Hawkes’ char­ity fund for Cam­p­den Home Nurs­ing grew by £277 through raf­fle sales.

Adam Sut­ton, who has only been back as a ju­nior mem­ber for a few weeks, won the Roy Cumper Cup with an out­stand­ing 40 points.

Ryan Wright was sec­ond with 39 ahead of Joe Gold­ing and Kyle Wright who both scored 36 points to take third and fourth pre­spec­tively.

A field of 86 con­tested the Til­brook Cup in hon­our of Ian Til­brook, the only mem­ber to have served as club pres­i­dent, cap­tain, com­pe­ti­tion sec­re­tary and hon­orary sec­re­tary.

The cup was pre­sented in 1962 and has been com­peted for ever since as a stok­play con­test.

Dereck Keenan was tri­umphant, scor­ing 65 nett, beat­ing Richard Preen by shot – hav­ing shot the low­est gross of 71.

Rob Lord and Chris Smith took third and fourth with 67.
