Bird swoops in to claim trophy win
» NIGEL Bird shot a superb nett 70 to win the Centenary Trophy at Broadway Golf Club.
Played for since the club’s anniversary in 1995, Bird claimed the trophy on countback from Jamie Thomas and Will Icke with David Goodwin fourth a shot back.
Guests from 20 different club joined home players in glorious sunshine to contest Ladies Invitation Day.
Isobella Lates and her partner Karen Stokes (Minchinhampton) took the title with an incredible 43 points.
Close behind were Esther Pettitt and her partner Elaine Ostroumoff (Redditch) with 42, one ahead of Judith Noyce and Joy Trinder (Stratford upon Avon).
Edged out of the top three on countback were Kate Bellamy and visiting partner Heather Cass (Leominster).
Ruth Masters (Evesham) was closest the pin on the fifth with playing partner Lin Andrew nearest in two on the par four 11th par.
Ladies captain Irene Hawkes’ charity fund for Campden Home Nursing grew by £277 through raffle sales.
Adam Sutton, who has only been back as a junior member for a few weeks, won the Roy Cumper Cup with an outstanding 40 points.
Ryan Wright was second with 39 ahead of Joe Golding and Kyle Wright who both scored 36 points to take third and fourth prespectively.
A field of 86 contested the Tilbrook Cup in honour of Ian Tilbrook, the only member to have served as club president, captain, competition secretary and honorary secretary.
The cup was presented in 1962 and has been competed for ever since as a stokplay contest.
Dereck Keenan was triumphant, scoring 65 nett, beating Richard Preen by shot – having shot the lowest gross of 71.
Rob Lord and Chris Smith took third and fourth with 67.
Adam Sutton with the Roy Cumper Cup
