Olympian hands half marathon to new team

STRICTLY Come Dancing star James Cracknell has handed over the Cheltenham Half Marathon to new organisers.

The former athlete and double Olympic gold medallist, 47, founded Runjoy’s South West Run Series. It was only in 2017 that the champion rower became the new event organiser, with business partner Charlie Beauchamp.

The South West Run Series events, which also take place in Exeter and Weston Super Mare, will all now be run and managed by WMP Creative.

Mr Cracknell, OBE, said about the half marathon: “I truly believe that events like this can help make societies healthier and happier places. Getting people out and about, being active, and engaging in a fun event all together is what it is about and I’m sure the WMP Sports team will do a brilliant job in doing just that in Exeter, Cheltenham and Weston-super-mare.”

Rupert Martin, head of events at WMP Creative, has promised to make the events “bigger, better and more engaging” with the “addition of the shorter, more accessible distances on the day before”.

The Still Moving Cheltenham’s Half sees over 4,500 participants take over Cheltenham in the half marathon and community mile events.
