Avening end on high note to stay up
THE Cain & Fuller CDCA season came to an end with a happy ending for Avening & Cherington as they beat near neighbours Oakridge in a low scoring affair to secure their place in Division One.
Oakridge had a solid start through Ed Bryant (18) and Jim Woodcock (15) but once Jay Richings (5-7) and Alistair Bullock (2-15) entered the attack the innings collapsed to a paltry 70 all out.
In reply the Avening & Cherington top order found batting just as difficult as Richard Heath (3-8) bowled a fine spell.
However P Carter (19*) and T Mcloughlin (17*) steadied the ship and took the hosts to victory in the 20th over.
Longborough & Sezincote clinched third place with a good win in a high scoring game at Fairford II.
Longborough batted in their usual fluent style as Henry Leonard (55), Luke Mcdonah (52) and Josh Newbould (38) pushed the score along to a formidable 269 all out.
For the hosts Derek Townsend (3-44) had good support from Harvey New (3-55), Kevin Smart (2-50) and Anthony Axel-berg (2-69).
Fairford struggled against good bowling from Newbould (3-49) but rebuilt through Townsend (70), Simon Embleton-smith (33*) and Kevin Smart (29).
Carl Luker (2-50) took key wickets then wicket-keeper Joe Newbould (3-9) discarded his pads to finish proceedings with Fairford 45 runs short on 224-9.
