Aven­ing end on high note to stay up

THE Cain & Fuller CDCA sea­son came to an end with a happy end­ing for Aven­ing & Cher­ing­ton as they beat near neigh­bours Oakridge in a low scor­ing af­fair to se­cure their place in Di­vi­sion One.

Oakridge had a solid start through Ed Bryant (18) and Jim Woodcock (15) but once Jay Rich­ings (5-7) and Alistair Bul­lock (2-15) en­tered the at­tack the in­nings col­lapsed to a pal­try 70 all out.

In re­ply the Aven­ing & Cher­ing­ton top or­der found bat­ting just as dif­fi­cult as Richard Heath (3-8) bowled a fine spell.

How­ever P Carter (19*) and T Mclough­lin (17*) stead­ied the ship and took the hosts to vic­tory in the 20th over.

Long­bor­ough & Sez­in­cote clinched third place with a good win in a high scor­ing game at Fair­ford II.

Long­bor­ough bat­ted in their usual flu­ent style as Henry Leonard (55), Luke Mc­donah (52) and Josh New­bould (38) pushed the score along to a for­mi­da­ble 269 all out.

For the hosts Derek Townsend (3-44) had good sup­port from Harvey New (3-55), Kevin Smart (2-50) and An­thony Axel-berg (2-69).

Fair­ford strug­gled against good bowl­ing from New­bould (3-49) but re­built through Townsend (70), Simon Em­ble­ton-smith (33*) and Kevin Smart (29).

Carl Luker (2-50) took key wick­ets then wicket-keeper Joe New­bould (3-9) dis­carded his pads to fin­ish pro­ceed­ings with Fair­ford 45 runs short on 224-9.
