GLOUCESTER youngster Dom Coetzer picked up an injury that will keep him out for most of the season within around 10 days of re-signing for the club.

The 21-year-old South African required surgery on his knee after hurting it in training, having only rejoined later in pre-season after initially leaving the club at the end of last season.

“It’s unfortunate for him because he literally just come back and within about 10 days of re-signing he gets this injury,” said Gloucester Academy forwards coach Trevor Woodman.

“That will be a long-term injury, we probably won’t see him until the back end of the season now.”

Coetzer, who can play at fly-half, centre or full-back, made four appearances in his first season at Gloucester after joining from the Stormers’ Academy, scoring on his Premiership debut against Sale last season.

Woodman has backed him to come back stronger from the setback.

“When you’re in and around a team also that has experienced those injuries as well, you see you’re not the only one in the squad that’s injured.

“If you were the only one singled out and you’re working on your own for six, seven months you’d probably be challenged mentally but when you generally see other people in rehab groups doing the same sort of thing, he’ll be disappointed because he’s not playing and he’ll obviously be frustrated but he’ll have the mental strength to get through it.

“He’s positive, he’s doing everything he can as early as possible so he’ll try to push the boundaries and get back when he can.”

Coetzer would have been expected to get a run-out in the early part of Gloucester’s season if he was fit with four Premiership Rugby Cup games before the league campaign gets underway.

Senior stars Charlie Sharples (ankle), Henry Trinder, James Hanson (both Achilles), Owen Williams (knee) and Mark Atkinson (shoulder) remain sidelined but Gloucester are expected to play a youthful side in their opening game against London Irish on Saturday.

“They’re still making their way back from injury so they’re still a little way off at the moment,” said Woodman.

“But I think generally being the first game it’s a good opportunity to give the new players that have signed in a Gloucester jersey.

“It’s a great opportunity for the young boys that have shown their promise in the senior academy to get their chance as well.”

Dom Coetzer returned to Gloucester soon after being released
