Hole in the wall Revamp for arcade’s entrance as part of £3million scheme
ONE of the county’s biggest shopping centres has six huge holes in it as the latest phase of a £3million revamp scheme takes place.
A large section of the southern half of the Regent Arcade shopping centre in Cheltenham is undergoing a big change.
What used to be the British Home Stores site is being prepared for other uses, including a boutique cinema and either shops or restaurants. A rooftop bar at the site is also planned.
Work on updating the Ormond Place entrance to the arcade is well under way and led to a big hole appearing in August.
The void had always been there but was masked by the old entrance.
It was exposed as part of the work to create a new contemporary facade for the Ormond Place entrance.
Just around the corner, on the southern half of Regent Street, the side of the arcade now has six big holes in it.
It is part of the plan to open up that part of the shopping centre.
A spokeswoman for the arcade said: “So that we don’t disturb the cinema customers once TIVOLI Cinema opens, we are carrying out preliminary works now to prepare the openings for entrances and shopfronts within proposed restaurant space, ready for the three new units or shops in Regent Street.
“Contractors are currently taking out the block work from the side of the old BHS unit to create openings for glazing and doorways, which will be boarded up again until the units are let.
“This phase of the work will be completed by the end of next week.
“We hand-delivered a letter in early August to all of the businesses and homes in the immediate vicinity of the works explaining what was going to be happening.
“We want to be considerate neighbours and have always kept local residents informed at every stage of work going on at Regent Arcade.”
She added that the arcade was due to hand over the building to TIVOLI Cinemas by the end of November.
The new attraction is due to open in April next year.
