APP of the WEEK

FACEBOOK continues its assault on Snapchat with the introduction of an all-new app called Threads which picks out some of the most popular elements from Instagram, and puts them in a simpler interface.

This standalone app is camera-based messaging that connects you directly, using photos, messages, videos and stories, with the people on your

Instagram ‘close friends’ list.

There are none of the face-filters you get in the main app, but you can draw on pics and add text.

The other main feature is the ability to allow Instagram to guess what you’re up to and update your friends in real time – it knows where you are, so if you’re in a “shopping area” (AKA, a shop), it’ll automatically update your status as “Shopping”.

That all sounds a bit shady, but, all this is only available to people you have designated as “close friends”, and you can turn all that off anyway. The point is, though, that this is one of the first steps in Facebook and Instagram’s journey to offering a more closed, and more private, messaging service.
