A SUPER server could be installed in Cheltenham.

Network infrastruture provider Cityfibre wants to provide “extremely fast high-speed” broadband fibre connections for residents and businesses in the town, according to an application submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council.

The scheme would see a data centre be built in an empty unit of Cheltenham Trade Park, off Arle Road.

A covering letter from Cityfibre said it is “particuarly critical” to provide the town with high internet speed during the coronavirus pandemic.

The letter also said the infrastructure would mean internet users in the area would have highspeed full fibre broadband access.

Included in the plans are extractiuon vents as additional vents “will be required” due to the operation of a large number of computer systems.

It said: “The proposals represent essential infrastructure for Cheltenham and ensure that highspeed full fibre broadband access is availble to users in this part of the town.the scheme would offer substantial wider benefit by allowing Cheltenham to increase its capacity of extremely fast high-speed broadband fibre connections for the residents and business of the town, which is particularly critical during Covid-19.”
