Police take down fake ‘Bibury is closed’ sign placed outside village

-

» SOMEONE in a Gloucestershire village has put up a sign saying it is “closed to visitors”, prompting the police to take it down.

Officers on patrol in Bibury spotted the false sign, put up by someone in the area, which reads “Bibury is closed to visitors” in black writing on a yellow background.

The Cotswold village is popular among tourists and as the nation is still in the grip of coronavirus restrictions, some residents have attempted to keep people away.

However, the fake signs have been taken down by police. The force has since revealed that such an act is an offence and punishable with fines of up to £2,500.

Although lockdown rules initially prevented people from travelling outside their homes unless essential journeys were required, the relaxing of rules now allows people to visit places such as Bibury as long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to.

Gloucestershire Constabulary revealed the incident through their social media channels.

Cotswolds Police, found on the Twitter handle @Cotswoldspolice, posted: “Officers on patrol in Bibury have had cause to remove signs declaring that the village is closed. Such actions are offences and can result in fines up to £2,500.

“Whilst we understand fears, we remind all residents that people are now lawfully allowed to visit. #Stayalertsavelives”
