In a spin Georgina’s cartwheel marathon to help food bank fund

A12-YEAR-OLD girl from Cheltenham has been going headover-heels at home during lockdown and raising cash for a good cause in the process.

Georgina “Georgie” Kurlbaum, from Charlton Kings, has so far raised over £1,200 for The Trussel Trust by cartwheeling the distance of a marathon in her back garden.

And she hopes to raise even more by cartwheeling the full distance of 26 miles.

She had been covering 100 lengths of the garden a day towards her goal since May 2, which is a little less than a mile in cartwheels - although due to pain developed in her wrists and ankles, she has had to reduce this to about 80 lengths.

The Trussel Trust provide over 1,200 food banks all over the country for families in desperate need.

Georgie, who is a Year 7 pupil at Balcarras School, has already cartwheeled over 18 miles in her back garden, steadily working towards her end goal of a full marathon distance.

Proud mother Joanna said the idea was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old who raised over £32.79 million for the NHS by walking laps in his garden in the lead up to his centenary birthday.

Mrs Kurlbaum said: “Our garden is just over 15 metres long, so she is doing more than 2,800 lengths.

“Georgie has been out in the garden come wind, rain or shine, and has suf- fered painful wrists and ankles, but now has only about 6km [3.7 miles] to go.” Georgie said: “I was watching television and we were talking about what charities I should support.

“The Trussel Trust came up and they were saying how kids were hungry and they need help. So we thought, how about we support this one?

“I want to help kids who need food as I find it unfair how like I get food but some other people don’t.”

The girl has said she was “surprised” by the amount of support she has received on her Just Giving page and this has only motivated her towards her goal even faster.

Georgie, who has been doing gymnastics since she was a toddler at the age of three, has been keeping a tally of her distance which she updates after every session.

The determined school girl, whose father is a GP and has an older brother and sister, says her favourite school subjects are history and French.

Georgie is aiming to have the cartwheel marathon finished by Sunday, June 21.
