Corse snatch top spot despite one-wicket defeat

ALEX Binnie and James King guided Cirenceste­r to a dramatic one-wicket victory over Corse & Staunton who, despite this defeat, still clinched top spot in West of England Premier League Covid Group H.

The sides ended the season all square on 12 points with the honour of finishing first going to Corse courtesy of the fact that they had six wins compared to five for Ciren.

Ciren finished on a winning note thanks to the efforts of their last wicket pair, who batted out almost seven overs to secure the required 13 runs, Binnie ending on 18 while King was on two.

Corse battled their way to a total of 135 as skipper Tim Dannatt (29) top scored while Jono Jamiesonbl­ack claimed 4-17 from six. Brother Jamie then hit 43 off only 34 balls at the top of the order.

But wickets tumbled to Ed Goolden (3-16), Josh Preston (2-5) and Bertie Wyatt (2-36).

Bourton Vale secured a 12-run win over Frocester II for whom Taylor Ireland (6-28 from eight) shone.

Dan Davis smashed a remarkable unbeaten 219 off 133 balls (21 fours, 16 sixes) as Thornbury II cruised in by 84 runs at home to Cheltenham Civil Service, Jordan Rouse unbeaten on 106 for the visitors. Apperley were four-wicket victors at Painswick.

Cheltenham topped Group F with a 49-run triumph over Thornbury, thanks to Nick Evans (68 not) and Kieran Smith (63) and George Pritchard (4-34).

Harvey Jupp’s 5-15 was in vain as Stroud lost by a run to Dumbleton, Gloucester broke their duck with a two-wicket success over Rockhampto­n, Craig Collinson capturing 5-27, and Hatherley & Reddings had a nine-run win at Frocester.

Mark Fuller’s unbeaten century saw Witcombe to a seven-wicket win at Chedworth as they finished top of C East in Greene King IPA Gloucester­shire County League campaign. Chedworth made 152-7 off their 40, Justin Forgan taking 2-5, but Fuller ensured Witcombe ended the season with another win.

Langford II finished just a point behind following a seven-wicket success away to St Philips North, thanks to Jack Brown (5-21) and Pete West (4-34).

Aston Ingham suffered a 95-run home reverse against Redmarley in A West, Ben Gwilliam starring with 3-19. Westbury-on-severn held off Tewkesbury by six runs, Alex Gray top scoring on 97, while Kingsholm dispatched Cinderford St John by seven wickets thanks to Caleb White (5-34) and Matt Cayless (76 not).

Lydney’s Jon Kear (112) and Alex Gooding (99) put on an unbroken 216 for the third wicket, setting up a 159-run home success over Gloucester AIW Sports.

Cheltenham II sealed the spoils in A East after beating Langford by 19 runs, opener Alex Haworth hitting 82 and Sathya Prakash capturing 4-23.

The A South honours went to Chipping Sodbury with a 129-run defeat of Frocester III following a four-wicket reverse for Cam at Frampton-on-severn.

Craig Scully (83) and Josh Morris (79) put on an unbroken 162 for the fourth wicket for Sodbury and Jamie Rendell claimed 5-26.

Skipper Jay Westwood plundered 139 while there were half centuries from George Bailey and Alistair Bell as Hawkesbury Upton cruised in by 171 runs at Oldlands.

Newent finished top of B West following an 88-run home defeat of Lydney II while the C West honours went to Parkend, who cruised past Westbury-on-severn by 152 runs, Scott Ayres capturing 6-15 from eight overs.

David Steinham was in outstandin­g form for Apperley II, hitting 57 and then taking 4-24 to seal a one-run home victory over Aston Ingham.

Quedgeley & Hardwicke topped C South after cruising past Tormarton by 171 runs.
