edward.stilliard@reachplc.com HOPPERS in Cheltenham can now enjoy a new supermarket which has opened in the town.
German supermarket chain Lidl’s new branch on Swindon Road opened its doors for the first time today (Thursday).
It has replaced the existing store nearby on Grosvenor Terrace which closed on Wednesday.
About 15 new jobs have been created for people in the area while all the existing employees from the Grosvenor Terrace store have been kept on.
The store opening times will be 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday,
Sand 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Lidl GB’S regional head of property, Glen Stidever, said: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Cheltenham.
“It is great for us to be able to invest into Cheltenham and redevelop a key town centre site while providing a new store to our customers that meets all their needs.
“We are incredibly grateful to local residents for their patience and understanding during the construction phase and now can’t wait to start serving our multiaward winning products to the local community.”
The new store will be providing surplus food and customer donations to the Cheltenham Foodbank, P3 Charity Gloucestershire ABS, The GCAFE and Cheltenham’s Open Door to support those in a crisis.
The store has a 1316 metres square sales area and features facilities such as an in-store bakery, longer-style tills, a customer toilet, baby changing facilities, solar panels, electric vehicle rapid charging spaces and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.
The supermarket has installed protective screens at checkouts along with the protective visors and masks for colleagues to wear if they wish, and is encouraging customers to pay by contactless payment methods where possible.
