Work begins on new Aldi store and Costa coffee shop
THE diggers have moved in as work finally begins on building the latest Aldi supermarket and Costa coffee shop.
People driving along Grovefield Way in The Reddings have seen a patch of land dug and smoothed over in readiness for the development.
It is being built next to the BMW Cotswold showroom, near to the Arle Court roundabout, and just over half-amile from the Asda supermarket in Hatherley Lane which opened in 2011.
This initial work is expected to last six weeks and comes after a long planning process
The construction work is expected to then last for 30 weeks. Under the permission, building work will run Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6pm and no work on Sundays or public holidays.
The planning battle Developers Hinton Properties (Grovefield Way) Ltd managed to overcome two major obstacles to getting the project off the ground.
It obtained planning permission for an Aldi food store, Costa Coffee, Happy Days Nursery and offices there.
It won the right to include the Costa Coffee unit after winning a planning appeal in December last year and in April managed to get the council to remove what it regarded as a problematic planning condition.
That had required the offices at the site in Corinthian Way, off Grovefield Way, to be built before the Aldi store could open. The developer said the condition was too onerous and had a “significant negative impact on the deliverability of the scheme”.
