Virtual residencies to throw spotlight on a trio of artists
EACH summer The Wilson invites artists into the museum to take over a gallery as an artist in residence.
Here at The Cheltenham Trust we recognise how this year it is more important than ever to nurture our mental health and wellbeing and how culture can comfort, create and inspire as we continue to live through the covid19 pandemic.
As The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum is currently closed the traditional format of the annual artists in residence has been revised to enable artists to continue to engage with the local community.
Six residencies have been selected and those residencies are taking place safely from the artists’ home or studios in the virtual project, Artists in THEIR residence.
The virtual residencies will roll out over the next few months with the work of each residency featured on The Wilson’s website.
The first residency a collaboration called The Three of Us, brings together three artists, Rob Mackie, Ally Goff and Emily Lawlor.
The three share skills in working in different mediums including clay, mosaic, painting and drawing.
The unifying theme running through their virtual project is survival which, they believe is particularly pertinent as we continue to confront and deal with this basic human instinct during these unprecedented times of the pandemic.
They said: “The power of art to contribute to mental and physical wellbeing is the driving force behind our collaboration.
“We want to explore the idea of creating a lifeline through art, examining the themes of survival, safety, and vulnerability through our creativity, using different media, drawing on our different skills.”
