Station sees just 12 passengers an hour… but it’s more than last year

THE busiest and quietest railway stations in Gloucester­shire have been revealed, with one used by just 12 people an hour.

Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station saw a total of 108,234 uses in the year from April 2019 to March 2020.

That is 2,081.44 entries or exits per week on average and makes the station the least used in Gloucester­shire. It equates to 12.4 people using the station each hour.

The 2019/20 figure is up by five per cent from the same period in 2018/19 when it saw 102,688 uses.

The Office of Rail and Road said a dramatic drop in passenger numbers happened across all British stations at the end of March, meaning that Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station bucked the national trend. It suggested that this was most likely due to lockdown restrictio­ns advising against all unnecessar­y travel.

Data from ticket sales show that the busiest station in Gloucester­shire was Cheltenham Spa, with 2.6 million entries or exits in the same period.

This was 7,098 per day on average and was higher than the 2018/19 period when 2.5 million entries and exits were made.

The busiest station in Britain was London Waterloo, which saw a huge 86.9 million entries and exits – down 7.7 per cent from last year.
