-

FORMER Cheltenham Town skiper John Finnigan is leaving his role as the club’s commercial manager.

Finnigan played in both of Cheltenham’s League Two play-off final wins in 2002 - scoring one of the goals - and 2006.

A statement on the club’s website confirned his departure, saying: “It is with great regret and as a consequence of restrictions upon the commercial activities of the club due to the coronavirus pandemic that the club has recently taken the decision to end John’s employment with us as commercial manager.

“We would like to thank John not only for his service to the club’s commercial department over the recent years but also previously as a greatly respected captain and player of the Team.

“John accepts the cub’s decision, which he understands and regrets, and wishes the club every future success.

“We wish John all the very best and hope to see him regularly at future matches and club social occasions.

“On behalf of everyone at the Club, we wish John good luck for the future.”

Finnigan said on social media site Linkedin: “I’m extremely sad to report that my employment with Cheltenham Town FC has come to an end. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed as the club has a big place in my heart and has played a big part in my life so far.

“Huge thanks to all I have worked with in both spells and to all those who have supported me throughout my time as a player and commercial manager.

“My congratulations go to Michael Duff, his staff and his team who have had a fantastic two years culminating in the recent promotion to League One, all this despite the disruptions of Covid-19. Remarkable stuff!

“I’m very proud of what has been achieved in my time both on and off the pitch and hope the club can keep improving both departments in the future.

“Hopefully my departure will help contribute towards the club’s financial stability in the near future.”
