Living well with dementia. Loving life at Sandfields
The team at Sandfields care home do everything they can to make each day special for residents living with dementia. They learn as much about each resident so they can organise activities and experiences they’ll love.
Residents who are living with dementia live life as fully as anyone else, enjoying hobbies and even having their wishes come true. Howard, the home’s
resident photographer, recently judged a staff photography competition; while Jo, a keen ballroom dancer, watched professional ballroom dancers strut their stuff before taking to the dance floor herself (prior to the first lockdown).
Every day brings something different, from quizzes and music, to arts and crafts. Residents recently went ‘back to school’ doing light-hearted science experiments. And there are always gardeners keen to get outside and keep the gardens looking good.
Residents are supported to be independent – making their own drinks, helping with the washing up or folding the laundry. One former resident Ken, a gentleman who lived with dementia, helped with the decorating. An active and practical man (he had a pedometer to keep track of his daily steps) was happy and content because he was busy.
One relative comments, “The staff are all caring and compassionate and treat residents with the utmost respect. There’s a true ‘family’ atmosphere.”
