Housing Plans for run-down garages given the go-ahead
UNSIGHTLY garages which have been a magnet for anti-social behaviour in a village will be turned into affordable homes.
Plans to build 11 homes for those struggling to afford a place to live in Bishop’s Cleeve have been given the green light by Tewkesbury Borough Council.
The houses will be built on Bishop’s Drive near Bishop’s Cleeve Primary and will see 92 derelict garages demolished to make way for the houses.
Rooftop Houses has been granted planning permission by Tewkesbury Borough Council to build in the area and say that the proposed development will “enhance the area by removing dilapidated buildings that are blighted by anti-social behaviour and build much needed affordable homes for local people, with modern design at the forefront.”
The proposal includes four one-bedroom maisonettes for rent, four twobedroom houses and three three-bedroom houses for shared ownership.
According to councillors, the area has seen an uptick of anti-social behaviour in the past.
Parish councillor for Bishop’s Cleeve Andy Walker said: “Anti-social behaviour is certainly an issue for Bishop’s Cleeve - not as much as in the centre of Gloucester or Cheltenham, but it is an issue.
“This has been a problem in this area as the garages have given a space for that kind of behaviour, and it’s also a concern that anyone looking to push anything like drugs on to kids would be able to do so without being seen.”
He added: “There’s also a need for more affordable housing in the village, so it’s a good idea in that respect as well.”
Tewkesbury Borough Councillor Helen Munro (LD, Cleeve Grange) also supported the plans and said: “It’s a great way of making use of the land, as it’ll mean more affordable housing for local people.”
A Rooftop Housing Group spokesman said: “Suitable and affordable accommodation for rent is in high demand, but availability’s limited, so the one-bedroom maisonettes will support local people who want to find suitable housing for single-person households and stay in the local area.
“Shared ownership properties will offer much-needed accommodation and provide local people with highquality, affordable homes. The new homes are designed to prevent overlooking to and from adjacent properties.”
With several pre-start conditions to cover, Rooftop Housing says it hopes to commence construction upon appointment of the contractor.
