New team to build better life for all

- Councillor Rowena Hay Leader, Cheltenham Borough Council

OUR election manifesto pledged that we would work hard to build a better life for all Cheltenham people. Now the voting is over for another year and the Liberal Democrats remain in charge of the council, that is exactly what we will be doing.

We are focusing on six key areas. The first is helping Cheltenham recover from Covid-19. The second is building a more prosperous town. We’ll be doing what we can locally to tackle climate change. We will continue to invest in services and people.

Our £180million investment in affordable, quality housing will continue. Finally, we will be responsible with local taxpayers’ money.

But it’s also important to take a moment to consider the past year, which has been a struggle for so many of us. We have lost loved ones, jobs, suffered mental and physical ill health and families have been strained.

For people in our communities living alone, the experience has been one of extreme isolation.

Despite all this, I’m so proud of the way our town has handled the pandemic, helping the most vulnerable and supporting our key workers.

The Liberal Democrat-led council has been working hard during this time to ensure we are in the strongest possible position to bounce back.

Delivering new jobs at the exciting Golden Valley development, helping our town centre and businesses to bounce back and realising our ambitious housing investment plans will be right at the top of our agenda.

We also know that looking after the planet and nature is hugely important to local people. That’s why we will be pushing ahead with our support for community initiatives, efforts to improve air quality and the Cheltenham Zero partnership too, as we strive to meet our environmental goals.

And of course, we will ensure that we do all we can to support the town’s cultural offer and promote local pride, while looking after our most vulnerable people.

Our refreshed cabinet has already met and we will be working hard to deliver on these priorities. You can learn more about the new team by visiting www.cheltlibdems.org.uk/cabinet.
