Fire put out in opening game by the holders

GLOUCESTER­SHIRE pair Ryan Higgins and David Payne made a losing start to the Hundred as their Welsh Fire side went down by nine wickets to defending champions Southern Brave.

Fire made only 107-7 in their innings,

Higgins making 11 off 18 balls, and James Vince hit 71 not out as Brave cruised home.

Payne bowled 15 balls, conceding 27 runs and Higgins sent down five balls, giving away five runs.

Fire then suffered a second loss,

going down by 39 runs to Oval Invincible­s. Payne took 1-33 in 20 balls and Higgins 2-31 also in 20 as Invincible­s made 158-5, with Fire limping to 119-6, higgins finishing six not out.

Birmingham Phoenix, featuring three Gloucester­shire players, were beaten by six wickets by Trent Rockets.

Miles Hammond opened for Phoenix, making 28 in 19 balls, and Benny Howell was run out for 11, while Graeme van Buuren was one not out as they made 143-7.

Howell bowled his 20 balls for 19 runs and van Buuren bowled 10 balls for 28 but Rockets won with three balls to spare.
