Kelly’s Wales secure best Games finish

FORMER Cirenceste­r Hockey Club man Steve Kelly and his Wales squad missed out on the men’s hockey semi-finals after a 4-1 defeat to India, Gareth Furlong scoring for Wales.

They set up the final group match showdown after coming from a goal down against firm underdogs Ghana to run out 6-1 winners. The side secured their best-ever Games finish with sixth.

Meanwhile, Cheltenham­based Falkland Islands badminton player Laura Harada’s Commonweal­th Games adventure ended with a mixed doubles defeat in Birmingham.

The 28-year-old lost 21-3, 21-4 alongside partner Duane March to Jamaican pair Sam Ricketts and Tahlia Richardson.

Laura’s outing in the ladies’ doubles alongside Louise Williams saw them beaten 21-4, 21-5 by Scotland pair Julie Macpherson and Ciara Torrance.
