Restaurant sector rocked by double closure
THE gastronomic scene in Cheltenham has been reduced with the announcement of the closure of two popular restaurants – The Daffodil and The Fire Station.
Notices at The Daffodil, in Suffolk Parade, expressed the “great sadness” felt at the decision. Refurbished as recently as February this year, it was described as a ‘hidden gem.’
Tucked away inside a beautiful 1920s cinema, the interior was a lesson in uber Art Deco, with a sweeping staircase and beautiful entrance reception. It epitomised the era of the Great Gatsby and Hollywood glamour.
The owners blamed a number of factors behind their decision. A notice said: “The pressures during Covid followed by the continued difficulties throughout the hospitality industry of recruiting enough high quality staff has meant that we feel we cannot continue to operate at the standards to which an iconic restaurant such as this fully deserves.
“We are so grateful for all of your support over the years; we have hosted many amazing events and people. We will miss our fantastic customers and staff greatly.”
The Daffodil will continue to host The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival Events during October. Meanwhile, the Fire Station restaurant, in St James’ Square, closed in June with no prior notice. There is no indication if this was another casualty of the pressures of Covid and staff recruitment.
